It is a time to slow down and learn to trust the slow work of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit. It is a time to let light into dark places, celebrate God’s provisions and gifts and bring every quandry and question before Jesus, our friend and savior. It is a time for crying, laughing, pondering, silence, listening, and every emotion that God has granted his beloved children. It is a time for awe and wonder at the movement of the Holy Spirit. It is sacred ground.
Spiritual direction is not counseling. It is not fixing or advising. It does share some similarities with counseling in that there is a safe, confidential space for self-reflection and deep listening.
I’m Kara Priehs, a person who loves to listen and journey with people as they seek a deeper formation in Christ. The gifts I have to offer on that journey are honor, presence, safety and a tender-heart. One of my core desires in life is to lead with love…to love well.
I received my training through Sustainable Faith, a Christian organization dedicated to the formation of spiritual directors. I am a graduate of the Dave Nixon, Jody Nixon and Megan Poole cohort. In my second year of training I chose the 19th annotation of the Ignatian Exercises. I have my bachelor degree in Biology.
We meet in a quiet, confidential space for one hour. At the beginning of the session, I check in with you to see how you are doing since we last met. I will offer you a choice of a time of silence, prayer or a reading from a book. After that you bring whatever questions, thoughts, reflections that are coming to you and we see how God will meet us in this time. We sit in the long and loving gaze of God together. I typically end our session with a prayer.
Note: A consultation call is required before scheduling.

When I am not practicing spiritual direction these are the things that draw my heart to beat a little faster: tending my farm animals, hanging out with my husband and my adult children, loving on my puppies, cuddling with a cat, swimming, spending time at my family cabin, hanging out with my siblings and friends, climbing up a mountain, baking a sweet treat, making a loaf of sourdough bread or cooking Indian food.

Spiritual direction training has been an unmeasurable gift to my faith. Receiving spiritual direction myself leaves me with a sense of coming home (thus the name of my business) and a deep gratitude for her companionship. My spiritual director helps me see.
Kara’s warm and gentle presence creates a safe space to explore where my own heart is at and then how to better align it with the heart of Jesus. She takes such great care of our time together-listening intently, asking rich questions, and providing meaningful observations-all the while allowing the Holy Spirit to move and work. My time with Kara continues to surprise me in the best way, and draw me deeper into my relationship with Jesus. J.C.
Meeting with Kara is at the same time gentle and challenging, easy and emotional. She has a soothing, warm presence and a way of bringing me to the heart of a question. Often, she has a knack for asking questions no one has asked me before—questions I realize I should have answered long ago. Other times, her questions remind me of the long journey I've already been on with Christ in an area. It is amazing how often I can circle an issue for weeks, and one question can bring me out of the loop to see things in a new light. C.S.
A few short years ago I found this simple statement quite frustrating and nearly impossible to grasp. I now find it quite comforting (and still frustrating at times). Like a gentle breeze on a hot summers day, spiritual direction can point us to the slow work of God in our lives and enliven us to grasp its beauty and hope and long for more.
