The Dragonfly

In spiritual direction the imagination is seen as a tool to connect with The Holy Trinity.  It is viewed as a doorway to divine connection.  My experience of the church growing up was that the imagination was viewed with deep skepticism, wariness, caution and a quickness to label anything imagined as evil, wrong or not trustworthy.  So, it was with great delight and eagerness that I learned and fully accepted through my spiritual direction training and my Ignatian training to embrace my imagination and connect with Jesus and Father God through it.

The photo above is of a necklace with a dragonfly pendant on it.  I purchased it when I graduated from my Ignatian studies and it holds a special place for me because of an imaginative experience I had.  My husband and I are blessed to own a forty-one acre hobby farm with forests, a pond, a barn, pastures and a beautiful home.  My front pasture is the scene of my imaginative prayer where I was dressed in a white gown, there’s a picnic blanket laid on the ground for me to rest on, Father God is there with me, it’s a sunny day with a gentle breeze and there are so many dragonflies-a caramel golden color flying around the pasture.  They lift off from the end of a blade of grass or the tip of a weed and soar through the air.  It’s magical.  That is a safe place for me to go.  I feel held there and seen by God.  I feel free and childlike.

Where is your safe place?  Have you used your imagination to connect with The Trinity?  The possibilities are endless and the door is open for you to explore.
